The key to wisdom is teachability. The key to teachability is humility. When your willingness to listen is dictated by "your credentials" versus "their credentials" (or lack thereof), you are doing yourself, and those around you a great disservice.
There are lessons to be learned from everything around you - both human and animal, art and science, life and death; but you won't be in a place to learn if your mind remains closed. Cynicism and haughtiness are direct blockades to the acquisition of wisdom, so if you really want it stop being a respecter of persons, climb down off your high horse, and open yourself up to the idea that everyone and everything you will ever encounter in your lifetime is your teacher.
